Analysis of crowds in public events to anticipate stampedes and guarantee safety, also in a pandemic scenario

Computational modelling plays an important role in the design of the security plan.

Cantene drives crowd analyses to guarantee safety in big events held in public spaces, such as stadia, stations, malls, atria and skyscrapers, also in a pandemic context. The security plan is made of four main phases, in which Cantene operates through fluid dynamics simulations modelling in matter of crowd analysis during the design of the spaces, the definition of the procedures of entrance and exit in a normal and in an emergency context; through its predictive CFD models, Cantene also supports the training of the staff, the communication strategy and the monitoring of data collected during the events to improve performances.

Covid free : During the pandemic of COVID-19, Cantene updated its approach taking into account the measures of social distancing in confined areas. Through quantitative analysis, it’s possible to increase the confidence on crowd management policies both to guarantee safety and health and economical impact, particularly on retail. Cantene identified two objectives: to guarantee a crowd load that allows the respect of social distance and to define crowd management policies about pathways. The approach is to reconfigure spaces identifying unidirectional patterns for people in order to reduce the probability of mutual interferences, by establishing an access control, with temperature monitoring, temporary routes and managing queues. Cantene collaborated with Lund University to be supported in the rigorous definition of the problem and runs R&D activity.

VALUE CHAIN

  • 01 DESIGN OF THE SPACES

CFD simulations and modelling help in deciding which alternatives fit better in matter of defining: the boundaries of the event, decompression and control areas, the entrance and egress openings, and the areas where crowd can flow in an ordinary or emergency scenario. Simulations have been updated for the pandemic context.

  • 02 DESIGN OF THE PROCEDURES

To manage crowds in an ordinary, emergency context or in a pandemic scenario. CFD simulations and modelling help in deciding which alternatives fit better during the phases of entrance, egress and all the course of the event. For the training of the security staff, too.

  • 03 COMMUNICATION AND POSTER DESIGNING

It’s possible to be more aware about the communication strategy, by studying paths that the crowd automatically prefers during the simulations.

  • 04 MONITORING

If you record the actual behaviour of the crowd during the event, it’s possible to compare it to the CFD simulations and improve your performances.
