Crowd management for the Nitto ATP Finals 2024

Cantene has developed a pilot project involving the use of an innovative AI-based image processing system for crowd monitoring at one of Turin’s most important events: the Nitto ATP Finals 2024. The DCM (Dynamic Crowd Management) platform, developed by the homonymous Australian company and distributed in Italy by Cantene, allows real-time monitoring of crowd behavior by providing a suitable dashboard displaying metrics related to user density, speed, and mood. The system enables the measurement of an event’s accessibility and the prevention of discomfort situations, including more critical ones such as congestion, through quantitative data. Using cameras installed to cover the open area between the Arena and the Fan Village, two monitoring zones were identified: a broader one and a more detailed one, located at one of the access gates, to accurately estimate the density in the area where queues form. A dashboard created specifically for the event displayed real-time trends of the three parameters (density, speed, and mood), along with the camera footage. The acquired images are recorded with faces blurred to respect the participant’s privacy. The dashboard configuration includes the definition of threshold values for each monitored parameter. The system sends an alarm to the control room if a threshold is exceeded, allowing the dedicated staff to decide whether to send stewards to manage the issue. The DCM platform acts as an actual black box. In case of critical incidents, the system’s video recordings, along with the quantitative analyses performed simultaneously, allow for a thorough reconstruction of what happened ex-post.
