Models for new perspectives

As engineers and researchers, we are facing a world of growing complexity. Together with professionals, managers and entrepreneurs, we are all searching for smart ways to pair social good with economics, green solutions with well-being in our designs and projects — to open better perspectives. This is where our work at Cantene, through fluid dynamic simulation models (CFD) and Fire Safety Engineering, comes in help.

Circular economy

Carbon footprint vs. Health. Recycling processes expose storage facilities to increasingly extreme safety hazards due to the concentration of toxic and flammable materials. Cantene assesses the potential risks of fire propagation (fire dynamics, explosions, jet fires) and structural damages through advanced simulation models (CFD, multiphysics). The analyses provide solid scenarios for safety design and adopting optimized solutions, achieving higher safety standards and reducing the environmental impact.

Urban infrastructures

Well-being vs. Energy saving. With its multi-scale approach, Cantene combines Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) 1D-3D simulations, pedestrian analyses and other tools to study the many components interacting in public spaces (crowds, ventilation, fire hazards). Among them, the risk analysis tool ARTU narrows down the number and magnitude of the scenarios to study. These evaluations help designers make their best decisions in safety management, from evacuation plans to energy saving. A practical example: advanced models allow optimizing fan capacity in tunnel ventilation to reduce consumption without compromising safety.

Real estate

Design quality vs. Investments. Buildings are pursuing new architectural, environmental and financial goals: distinctive design, healthy spaces and great adaptability over time have become top priorities. Cantene supports developers in studying the overall life cycle of their buildings, operating at the intersection among disciplines (civil and mechanical engineering, science of materials, management). In addition to safety design, risk analyses help define the most viable layouts, optimize equipment and maximize flexibility in the use of space — even in the more sophisticated architectures.

Mobility & energy

Emissions vs. Safety. Battery storage systems, hydrogen tanks, Liquified Natural Gas carriers: new energy sources come with great opportunities, and challenges. Mixing coding and advanced tools for their evaluations, Cantene specialists assess all the hazards posed by a new generation of energy facilities, such as fire in battery warehouses or H2 explosions. CFD simulations highlight the possible interferences among fuel facilities and buildings: the quantitative assessment of structural damages leads to better planning (e.g. in terms of safety distances).
